Famous Million Dollar Estates - A look at The Playboy Mansion

The Playboy Mansion West, located in Los Angeles, was sold for $100 million, half of its asking price, in August 2016. the most expensive house transaction in the area. The famous estate was purchased by Daren Metropoulos, the co-owner of Hostess Brands, and a partner of the private equity firm Metropoulos & Co.

You may want to know a few more interesting facts about this historic place. Hugh Hefner bought this 22,000 square foot mansion in Holmby Hills back in 1971 for $1.1 million. He lived here and at the Chicago estate, alternately. As part of the 2016 transaction, Hefner was allowed to stay at the estate until his death. He died in September 2017 at age of 91 years.

The new owner bought the elegant mansion next door, in 2009, for $18 million and now has combined the properties for a 7.3 acre compound, one of the largest estates in the city. He tried to get a historic cultural landmark status for the Playboy Mansion but was denied this landmark status. However, he did work with officials so it will be permanently protected from demolition, even by future owners and he was given permission to renovate, refurbish, modernize and update systems. This estate has been used for corporate activities, TV productions, magazine photography, charitable events and civic functions. Through the years there have been rumors that some residents of the Mansion had seen ghosts of women and an elderly man. Rest in Peace dear Hugh! ~LJ
