The Orlando area hotel occupancy and revenue per available room fared better than the national average in 2009.  But the local average daily room rate fell below average with an average daily rate of $92.90.  The occupancy rate is at 60.7% which just below Miami with the highest occupancy rate of 66.2%.  The national average occupancy rate is 55.1%.

The recession caused business and consumers to cut back on spending, which sent the convention/meetings and tourism industries into a slump nationwide for the past couple of years.  With fewer hotel guests, hotels are offering deep discounts to attract business.  The number of hotel openings in the U.S. is expected to drop nearly 45% from 2009, followed by even fewer new hotels in 2011.
