Seminole County Sales Tax could generate $260M over 10 years

Tue, Sep 07, 2010 at 11:54AM

Seminole County Public Schools is putting a half-cent sales tax on the November ballot.  If approved by voters, it would generate about $260 million for school construction, renovation and technology upgrades over 10 years.  On August 10, Seminole County Commission voted            unnanimously to put the half cent school capital outlay sales tax on the upcoming Nov. 2 Ballot.

Seminole County has a 7 percent sales tax now.  However, 1 percent of that now used for roads, storm water projects, city infrastructure, and school construction and maintenance is set to expire at the end of 2011.  So, unless that is renewed, the proposed new half-penny tax which would start in 2012 would give the county a 6.5 percent sales tax.  Nearby  Orange and Volusia counties have a 6.5 percent sales tax.
